Cirque du Freak is a story about a freak show circus a vampire and a boy named Darren Shan. Darren was a normal boy until he went to the show with his best friend. Darren saw this spider that was owned by a man named Mr.Crepsly. After the show Darren's friend said something to him. Something he did not understand. He said "Darren. No matter what happens you will always be my best..." He slipped away with the crowed. He went to see Mr.Crepsly and knew he something that Darren didn't. He was a vampire.  He wanted to he to be turned into a vampire.At that same time Darren had walked into the room. He heard what he said. Mr.Crepsly tested to see if he was good or evil and told him he was evil. From there Darren was shocked to here that. His friend left while Darren stole Mr.Crepsly's spider. Later on after his friend came back to school, Darren spent less and less time with his friends. His friend was invited over to see what he was hiding. He saw the spider. At first he was shocked but after he smiled. Darren showed him what he could do with the spider. He told him to keep quiet so that the spider wouldn't attack. Darren's sister came bursting into the room scaring the spider which resulted in the spider attackng. After being taken to the spider Darren didn't answer any of the questions involving his friend. Mr.Crepsly came later that night to make a deal with Darren. He had to become his vampire apprentice for an antidote. He became the apprentice and pretended to die so he didn't leave anything important behind. His friend was there and swore to kill him with a stake for getting his dream. He was delusional and went crazy with the discovery. After, Darren and Mr.Crepsly left the town in the light of the moon.
